  • Can renew affect bio filter?

If I understand correctly renew removes organics and ultimately lowers ammonia, nitrate and nitrite. So could it starve off the bio filter in a small tank? Or at least starve off a big portion of it ? Or take something away from the plants ?

very specifically a 10 gallon light to moderately planted single betta tank.

Hello Schwartr, thanks for reaching out!

Renew will remove a portion of the unprocessed organics from the system which may reduce the size of beneficial bacteria colonies (they do not need to be as large to handle the available waste), but one cannot starve existing bacteria colonies to death using Renew. For one, fish excrete pure ammonia through their gills, bypassing the stage in which Renew can remove the nitrogenous waste from the water. This source of ammonia is not impeded by the addition of Renew, so the bacteria colonies will still have a source of ammonia no matter how much Renew you use.

    Hope this helps!

      Great Thank you!

One last off the wall question. Does renew typically come with a foil seal or no? I just got some off the amazon and it had no foil under the cap. It just seemed weird to me.

I believe these used to be packaged without a foil seal, but newer bottles are sealed.

        Hope this clarifies!

Renew will not starve or impact the bio filter in a negative way, even in a smaller tank. There is always organic waste being produced and will provide enough for the bacteria, even in the presence of chemical filtration such as Renew or Purigen.
